After the disappointing draw at SSV Ulm, Hamburger SV is threatened with a Christmas in crisis mode. Ex-HSV captain Aaron Hunt is harsh on the team.

“Such a catastrophic performance like the 1-1 draw in Ulm makes you think,” said the 38-year-old in the “Bild” interview about the situation on the Elbe.

The Rothosen had left a desolate impression against the promoted team on Saturday, just before the break. The North Germans only got one win from their last seven league games.

Hunt analyzed that the quality is currently lacking after the failures of Robert Glatzel and Ludovit Reis. At the same time, the crisis is also the result of a lack of attitude.

“To be honest, I’m missing the leading players in the team. I only have the impression that defensive midfielder Daniel Elfadli really takes responsibility on the pitch. After that, it actually stops for me,” the former offensive player railed against the HSV stars.

Magath as coach at HSV?

Hunt finds it significant that Hamburg stumbles surprisingly often, especially away from home against smaller teams. “There may seem to be motivation problems,” said the former midfielder.

With a view to the open coaching question, the HSV idol is in favor of a new beginning. Football under Merlin Polzin “has become more attractive than it was recently under Steffen Baumgart.”

“But I don’t know whether the team feels a little too comfortable under him,” said Hunt and added: “I generally find it difficult for every coach to have HSV as their first head coaching station.”

No matter who ultimately takes over the job: Baumgart’s successor will face a mammoth task, says Hunt. Because HSV has tried out all types of trainers in recent years. And no one breathed new life into the club in the long term.

However, Hunt has a preference: “I think you should bring in an experienced man like Bruno Labbadia or Felix Magath. Bruno, for example, knows the club very well, is pressure-resistant and storm-tested, and has already done a good job as a coach in Hamburg twice . He knows how to tackle such a team.”
