In July this year, August, the ancestor of the Limburg wolves and the father of the surviving cubs, was killed by a car in Oudsbergen. “It is earlier than other years that the first wolf cub was killed by a car, but that may be because they had to become independent more quickly due to the death of August,” says Jan Loos of Welcome Wolf.

It was briefly feared that the wolf that was killed in Houthalen-Helchteren would be Noëlla. “That would have been tragic news,” says Jan Loos. “The cubs that are still alive and are staying in the military domain in Houthalen-Helchteren might not survive because they would no longer receive lessons from their mother. still have to learn to hunt, find food and cross roads. That would be a lot more difficult if Noëlla could no longer teach them that,” says Loos.

There are now at least five living cubs in Limburg. “Originally there were seven, but recently we have only seen six more running. So one of them was killed by a car tonight,” it said.

The wolf cub will be picked up by INBO on Monday from the Nature Aid Center of Oudsbergen. A DNA test and an autopsy will then take place.
