The Dutch government wants to reduce the number of dairy farms in order to reduce nitrogen emissions. Letting cows graze in the meadow is also a solution to reduce these emissions. In a barn, all cows defecate and pee on a small piece of land, which means that there is a lot of ammonia – and therefore nitrogen emissions. In a meadow, the spread of manure and urine is much greater, so that there is also less nitrogen in a central location.
