Paris Saint-Germain scored a must-win on the return of soccer world champion Lionel Messi. At home at the Prinzenpark Stadium, coach Christipophe Galtier’s team defeated relegated AJ Ajaccio 5-0 (2-0).
Messi, who was last absent due to a suspension, was in the starting line-up as announced by the coach, but the 35-year-old Argentinian failed to score. According to a report by broadcaster RMC Sport, when Messi whistled at an early corner kick, thunderous applause erupted.
Pack formation and red cards
The goals for the leaders in Ligue 1 were scored by Fabian Ruiz (22′), Achraf Hakimi (33′), Kylian Mbappé (47’/54′) and Mohamed Youssouf (72′) with their own goals. A good ten minutes before the end there were two red cards after a pack formed: Thomas Mangani from Ajaccio and Hakimi were sent off for assault.
PSG continue to lead the table with six points ahead of RC Lens. The second in the table had won 2-1 at home against Stade Reims on Friday. There are still three game days left in France, and Ajaccio can no longer be saved.
future open
How things will continue with Messi should be decided in the coming weeks. He was suspended after a short trip as a tourism ambassador to Saudi Arabia, but the ban was lifted early after the South American made a public apology.
However, practically nobody is assuming that PSG will remain, Messi’s contract ends on June 30th. In addition to an alleged offer from Saudi Arabia and strong interest from Major League Soccer in the USA, there is speculation about a return to FC Barcelona.
