Because of the energy crisis, several public buildings and landmarks in Berlin are no longer illuminated for the time being. On the night of Saturday it was dark for the first time in the House of Representatives in Mitte.

For other objects – such as the Berlin Cathedral or the Lustgarten – this has been the case since last Wednesday. Other buildings are to follow.

The Senate for the Environment announced that it was responsible for 200 buildings that were no longer illuminated at night.

This also includes the Victory Column, the Red Town Hall and Charlottenburg Palace. The lighting is to be gradually switched off over the next three to four weeks.

There are about 1400 radiators in operation, it said. The electricity costs amounted to around 40,000 euros per year.
