“Lifeless” Hertha BSC in the pillory

Thorben Marx spent six years at Hertha BSC at the start of his career. Born in Berlin, he played a total of 100 competitive games for the capital city before moving on to Arminia Bielefeld and later Borussia Mönchengladbach. Above all, the current situation with the “Old Lady” is driving the former midfielder upset.

“It’s amazing what’s happening at Hertha right now! The last week had already started ‘well’ before the bankruptcy – with the verbal sweeping blow of your own investor! That was a lot of steam. Didn’t Lars Windhorst think about the consequences? It was an absolute catastrophe for the club and the public image!”, Marx says in an interview with the “image” give vent to his frustration.

Investor Windhorst recently publicly complained that joining Hertha was probably a mistake. Despite major investments, many newcomers at all levels and high ambitions, the Berliners are currently only 15th in the Bundesliga. Most recently, RB Leipzig dealt with 1: 6.

Although his former club was weakened by a “heavy” number of corona cases before the game against the Saxons, the performance offered is completely “disappointing” for Marx. “There were still very experienced players on the pitch, so you can expect more – especially in a home game,” the 40-year-old clarifies.

The fact that the slump only happened after defender Marc Oliver Kempf was sent off with a red card in the 62nd minute is also no alibi for Marx. “The Hertha team seems too lifeless to me. You have to be smarter and defend better, because in the end the goal difference can be decisive in the relegation battle.”

Hertha BSC with a horror record

It is precisely this goal ratio that does not speak for the Berliners: With 51 goals conceded, they have the second-worst defense in the league. Only bottom SpVgg Greuther Fürth has conceded more goals so far. However, the demands and requirements of the “clover leaves” are also completely different.

Marx therefore does not locate the problem on the coaching bench, but in the squad: “The problem here is not so much the coach, but the players, who have been playing under their possibilities under many coaches in recent years. The professionals must be held accountable .” Nobody would expect the big kick anyway, the focus should now be on the relegation battle.

However, Marx leaves open whether the players on the pitch can flip the switch: “The worst thing is when you have players under contract who don’t give a shit. That can’t be! Everyone has to work for the club, their employees and the fans now burn!”
