Liège municipality in the spell of ‘Wafelgate’: Mayor has to hand in 6,000 euros because he handed out waffles during campaign

Waffles are a Belgian pride, but in the Liège municipality of Remicourt they have led to a lot of commotion. Mayor Luc Lhoest handed out free waffles during his election campaign in October. A committee has now ruled that he thereby violated the local election rules. His generosity is now expensive to be expensive: the mayor has to hand over no less than 6,000 euros from his wages.
