‘Lief’ Actief thanks goalkeeper Terwal for the draw against SVZ. ‘You are a disgrace yourself’

After ninety minutes and a bit there was a 1-1 draw on the scoreboard at the sports park in Eelde. Both trainers agreed that this was a final result that could not be disputed. The friendly derby never really ignited, except in both dugouts.

“We just couldn’t get it done in the second half,” analyzed coach Roland Beuvink. “Concentration, commitment, quality? If only I knew, because I’m sick of it.” It happened to Actief last week too. Against Westerwolde, his team gave away a 2-0 lead in the last eleven minutes. Now the Eelden team were also close to losing, if it weren’t for goalkeeper Sander Terwal who played a great game.

No wheel of fortune

“We are just too nice. Especially in a derby like this, it could be a bit more spicy,” said an Actief supporter. Perhaps that is typical of Actief, because even within the association people sometimes want to be more Catholic than the Pope. “We wanted to organize a ‘wheel of fortune’ after the match,” said assistant coach Bob Poelstra. “But that was not allowed by the municipality, that is a game of chance. We were not given an exemption for that.”

After some inquiries, it turned out that the Eelder club itself once went to the municipality to ask what was and was not allowed. Poelstra: “Then you wake up sleeping dogs, then enforcement has to be done. Some willing volunteers want to do it too well.”

One triangle after another

It was a two-faced match. Before tea, the home club should perhaps have been 3-0 ahead and the team of 30-year-old Wim Lamers had hardly anything to offer. Beuvink’s footballing hand was clearly visible among his young aspirants. One triangle followed another and after the fanatical Leon Buiter gave his team the lead after nine minutes after a scramble, he still had two good chances to widen the lead. Only the aluminum and Jasper Dieden closing post prevented that. After changing the goals, the game image changed. Active slumped more and SVZ, with the help of all-rounder Patrick de Vries, took the initiative. De Vries got his reward with fifteen minutes to play by scoring the equalizer and the 1-1 final score.

No example

In the last fifteen minutes it could have gone either way. Opportunities and possibilities followed each other on both sides. Both goalkeeper Terwal and Dieden made themselves heard. The municipal derby barely ignited, not even in the last fifteen minutes, but it did on the bench. Beuvink accused the SVZ linesman of raising the flag too often. “You are a disgrace to the fields,” the Actief coach shouted a little too loudly. To which Lamers soberly replied: “Fuck off dude, you’re a disgrace yourself.” The curses flew back and forth and both trainers showed themselves to be a bad example for their pupils.

Three generations of Matthijs

Buiter once again encouraged his team and his cousin Daan Matthijs, but to no avail. Grandfather Bennie Matthijs and uncle and father Paul Matthijs viewed the match with a different view. Almost every week, Actief honorary member Bennie Matthijs hears from Leon or Daan: “Grandpa, are you coming to watch?” And while grandpa looked proudly at his two grandsons, father and uncle Matthijs were critical: “There is a lot more football.” in these guys. You also saw that against Westerwolde, then they start talking and cursing and then things go wrong.”
