Lieberknecht: Darmstadt 98 on Bundesliga “club vacation”

Among the worst starts to the season

Coach Torsten Lieberknecht from promoted team SV Darmstadt 98, still without a win, compared the Bundesliga to a “club vacation”. In an interview with the streaming service “DAZN”, the 50-year-old said after the 3-1 loss at VfB Stuttgart on Friday evening: “For 25, 30 years, the same faces always go to the Robinson Club or I have no idea which club, and then it comes Add a new guest and then we see how they behave, what do they wear?”

Lieberknecht described the video referee in Cologne as a “bartender who also has an opinion and says: ‘You, be careful, the new guests are not what we imagine them to be’.” For his team it is now about finding new courage to find and give up respect as quickly as possible. “We first have to learn to find our way around,” says Lieberknecht. As a new guest you are looked at from all sides.

“There are the club bosses, there are the people who judge on and off the pitch and then there are those who say, pay a little attention. We have to keep an eye on it and we also have an eye on choosing a new club accordingly,” said the coach, who will face Werder Bremen with his team in a week’s time on Sunday. The “Lilien” had one of the worst starts to the season of any promoted team since the Bundesliga was founded in 1963/64. In terms of squad value, the club is in 17th place, ahead of Heidenheim with 32.8 million euros.
