The discounter Lidl will also increase the minimum wage for its employees in Germany from 12.50 to 14 euros from June. “Our colleagues put in above-average work every day, and it is important to us that they are paid above-average and fairly,” said the CEO of Lidl in Germany, Christian Härtnagel, on Wednesday.
Lidl is following the example of its competitor Aldi. Aldi had already announced at the end of April that it would increase the minimum wage for its own employees to 14 euros from June. The company justified the step back then with the current wave of price increases.
The minimum wage at the two largest German discounters will therefore continue to be well above the statutory minimum wage, which will only increase to EUR 10.45 in July 2022. (dpa)
