A good two months after the repeat election in Berlin, the Lichtenberg left-wing politician Claudia Engelmann claims to have appealed to the Constitutional Court.

Engelmann announced on Monday that she had filed an election examination complaint. (File number VerfGH 44/23). She would like a recount of the votes in the Lichtenberg 3 constituency.

In the Berlin elections on February 12, Engelmann was defeated by CDU candidate Dennis Haustein in the race for the direct mandate by only ten votes.

The state electoral committee refused a recount. She failed with summary proceedings before the administrative court and the higher administrative court. The judges did not see themselves as competent.

At the end of February, Engelmann therefore announced an appeal to the Constitutional Court.

Engelmann said that the parties involved in the proceedings had the opportunity to comment until May 8th. In addition to the constituency candidates, the President of the House of Representatives, the Senate Administration, the Berlin-Lichtenberg District Returning Officer and the State Returning Officer can also express their views.

“I see that as a positive signal,” said Engelmann. “The Constitutional Court takes my election review complaint seriously and is trying to bring the process to a quick conclusion.”
