Lic. Marcela Siciliano: What is functional old age?

Old age is a stage of life that follows adulthood and is characterized by physical aging and, in many cases, by changes in cognitive function. It is a natural period of life.

During old age, it is common for changes in the body and health to occur. The skin tends to become thinner and less elastic, wrinkles and age spots may appear. Bones can also become more brittle, increasing the risk of bone fractures. In addition, chronic health conditions can appear, such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis, and impaired cognitive function.

At the cognitive level, some people may experience changes in memory, concentration, and the speed of information processing. However, it is important to highlight that not all people experience these changes and that old age is not synonymous with disease or disability.

Despite the challenges that can arise, old age can also be a stage of life in which people enjoy more free time, can dedicate themselves to activities they enjoy, and draw on the experience and wisdom accumulated over the years. .

It is important to approach old age from a positive perspective and promote healthy agingwhich includes maintaining an active lifestyle, maintaining social relationships, maintaining a balanced diet and accessing appropriate medical care.

The term “functional old age” refers to the ability of an older person to carry out daily activities independently and without significant limitations. It focuses on evaluating the functional capacity and general well-being of a person in old age, beyond their chronological age.

Functional old age is based on the idea that Age does not necessarily determine a person’s ability to lead an active life and participate in daily activities. Rather than focusing solely on the physical or cognitive changes associated with aging, it considers a person’s ability to maintain autonomy and perform essential tasks of daily living.

Daily activities can include things like dressing, grooming, eating, moving around, doing housework, managing finances, and participating in social activities. Functional old age is assessed based on a person’s ability to perform these activities without or with minimal assistance.

The concept of functional aging highlights the importance of maintaining physical, cognitive, and emotional health as we age. Promoting a healthy lifestyle, maintaining a good physical condition, maintaining active social relationships and seeking adequate medical care are key factors in maintaining functional old age and enjoying a good quality of life in old age.
