After three years, another Liberation Festival has started in Roermond. For the first time, it will be held in the Arlopark on the Maas, and not on the Markt in the center.
The festival opened with the arrival of the Liberation Fire, which was brought from Wageningen to Roermond in a relay race. Lighting the flame in Roermond, just after 12:00, was still a bit of a struggle. It took some effort before the Liberation Fire was actually lit.

In addition to free performances by Duncan Laurence, Fiddler’s Green and THC on the two stages, there is also Plein van de Vrede on the festival site where you can talk to veterans and a freedom meal is served. The organization expects about 15,000 visitors.

The new festival site was supposed to be put into use in 2020, but that was canceled at the time due to the corona crisis. The Arlopark replaces the Markt because the latter place was too small for the event. During several editions, the festival site had to be closed due to the large crowds. For that reason, the Liberation Festival even considered moving to Sittard for a while, but after the intervention of the then governor Theo Bovens, an alternative location in Roermond was chosen.
