New bottlenecks have arisen on the electricity grid in Flevoland, Friesland, Gelderland, North Holland and South Holland. According to grid operator Liander, the maximum capacity of the grid has now been reached in those places.
As a result, there is no room to provide a new connection to companies that use a lot of electricity, for example.
Liander regularly publishes a list of bottlenecks on the overcrowded power grid. There are problems at Schiermonnikoog, Burgum, Hattem, Winterswijk and Zutphen. This is a result of the arrival of the many wind turbines, solar parks, charging stations, heat pumps and the sustainability plans of the industry. As a result, the demand for space on the grid has increased faster than the power grid could be expanded.

Liander is now investigating whether it helps to apply so-called peak hour avoidance in areas with bottlenecks. This would mean that producers or customers of electricity help to reduce the burden on the grid by temporarily reducing the introduction or consumption at peak times. This should relieve pressure on the power grid. However, according to Liander, this option is not a solution. Such a congestion management study has now been completed for the areas around Lelystad and Bemmel. The outcome is that bottlenecks cannot be completely resolved in this way.
