Lewis Hamilton suffered one of the worst Grands Prix of his career at ImolaAfter a ‘sprint’ race on Saturday in which he was unable to even get close to the top of the grid, Sunday’s race was even worse for the seven-time world champion. On lap 40 of the race he was lapped by Max Verstappen, something unusual for the Mercedes driver.
In the race he couldn’t pick up the pace to overtake anyone with this season’s undrivable W13, Hamilton crossed the finish line in 14th position and at that moment Toto Wolff intervened on the radio to apologize: “I’m sorry Lewis, I’m sorry for what you’ve had to drive today, I know it’s an undrivable car.
English bottomed out during the Emilia Romagna GP and just as in other seasons he had always had a halo of hope when things went wrong, this time he seems to have it clear: “I’ll try to recover in the best possible way, but I’m out of the championship for sure,” assured Hamilton. “No doubt about that. I think the team is… this is very difficult, everyone feels it and everyone is downcast, giving their best. So there is no one who is giving up and everyone is trying to move forward as fast as they can.”
Although he knows that the team is constantly working to find the fault with the Mercedes and achieve a good car, he does not have high expectations for the next GP for MIami: “I can’t say that I’m particularly anxious at the moment, but I’m sure that during the week I will reach a positive point of mind. I’ll be at the factory tomorrow to work with the guys and see what we can improve. At least Russell got some points today for the team. So I apologize to everyone for not being able to do it.”
