Leverkusen (dpa) – National soccer player Florian Wirtz may have been seriously injured in the Bundesliga game between Bayer 04 Leverkusen and 1. FC Köln. He had to be carried off in the 28th minute. The 18-year-old fell to the ground after a duel with Cologne’s Luca Kilian.
Wirtz obviously got his left foot stuck in the grass. He smacked the grass several times with his hand and waved to the Bayer supervisors. “We’re keeping our fingers crossed that it’s not a serious injury. Get well soon, Florian,” the national team said on their Twitter channel.
Nothing was initially known about the nature of the injury. Bayer announced during the game that Wirtz would be taken to the hospital. During the long treatment break, the former Cologne native was loudly insulted by many fans in the guest block.
