Bayer Leverkusen is currently dominating the Bundesliga. On Friday evening, the team even broke a record against Mainz – set by FC Bayern.
A 2-1 win over Mainz 05 on Friday evening means Bayer Leverkusen’s lead in the table over FC Bayern has increased to a whopping eleven points. But it’s not just in the Bundesliga that Xabi Alonso’s team is currently leaving Munich behind. With their success against the relegation candidates, Leverkusen also broke a record set by the reigning champions.
The “Werkself” are now unbeaten in 33 competitive games in a row. Not a single Bundesliga team has ever achieved such a series. The previous record was held by FC Bayern until Leverkusen’s Mainz game. Between December 2019 and October 2020, the club managed not to lose 32 games in a row.
Alonso praises players: “A great performance”
Xabi Alonso was quite happy about the record he had achieved: “I wasn’t interested in it before, but now it makes me happy. I’m proud of it,” said the Spaniard after the game. “I also have to congratulate my players. That’s a great achievement.”
Leverkusen has not lost a single game this season. The team is at the top of the table in the Bundesliga, in the round of 16 in the Europa League and in the semi-finals of the DFB Cup. Winning the historic treble seems to be a realistic scenario given the team’s continued strong form. Leverkusen’s last defeat was on May 27th last year. On the 34th matchday of the previous season they lost 3-0 to VfL Bochum.
In the next few weeks, Leverkusen could even extend their unbeaten streak. In the Bundesliga, 1. FC Cologne is waiting for Bayer next Sunday. During the week we play against Qarabağ Ağdam in the Europa League, before VfL Wolfsburg visits the BayArena in the league.
