Level dropped, but alert for higher water levels remains

The water levels in Drenthe have decreased somewhat in the past day, but water boards remain alert because of the precipitation that is expected today and tomorrow.

The Noorderzijlvest Water Board has announced that overflow areas have been deployed on Tuesday evening so that hundreds of thousands of cubic meters of excess water can flow into them. The areas were used because of the high water level of the Leekstermeer, which in turn is fed by De Onlanden and the higher areas in Drenthe. In addition, dikes and quays along rivers are checked for possible damage or subsidence. Noorderzijlvest manages wetlands in Northwest Drenthe, including around Assen.

Noorderzijlvest reported on Tuesday that the peak of a large part of the working area had been reached, but it may take a week and a half before the water level is back to the target level.

Vecht reaches highest water level so far

The WDO Delta water board reports that the highest water level was reached in the course of Wednesday. The river De Vecht was 1.20 meters higher than usual in winter. Due to the rain in the coming days, the water board believes that the water levels can rise even higher. In addition to De Vecht, WDOdelta manages large parts of the central and southwestern part of Drenthe.

Hunze and Aa’s still alert

Hunze en Aa’s water board is also taking measures. For example, the sandbags along the Noord-Willemskanaal and the Foxholstermeer will remain in place. It is also not yet responsible to remove the emergency dike along the Drentse Aa, according to the board. Hunze and Aa’s think it can take another two weeks before the water level in the work area is back to normal.
