Lesson from Uncle Willem | The Image of Groningen

Every week, the Groningen Archives select a photo from the press photo collection and write about the story behind it. This week: Uncle Willem at school.

It’s September and that means school has started again. In 1978, the teachers of the third class of the Sint Michaelschool in Groningen organized a special activity to start the school year. They ask help from the Central School Milk Committee for a lesson on this tasty subject. For the occasion none other than Ome Willem, played by Edwin Rutten, is the teacher on duty.

So this time no sandwiches of poop, which is always gaily sprinkled in the VARA children’s television program De film van Ome Willem. Milk is the subject this time. Ome Willem presents a game program in which all students can participate. Then they sing a specially composed school milk song together, after which milk is consumed from a carton. Everyone gets a school milk cap as a souvenir. This causes a double cap for some students, because real fans already wear an Uncle Willem cap.

It is not known whether the well-known ‘This fist on this fist’, written by language virtuoso Willem Wilmink, also sounded. Nevertheless, we can assume. Wherever Ome Willem appears, this song can be heard. Yippee the poopie!
