Leonor is an institution, by Álex Sàlmon

It must be frustrating in this society of the hyperego that an entire House of democratically elected political representatives applaud you for a few minutes and it is for the institution and not for you.

Leonor is, before Leonor, an institution. The applause in Congress was not directed at the merits or heroic actions of this young woman of the 21st century. No. She was simply an ovation to the institution of the State represents. Nor does he have, at the moment, to prove anything. It is the role of the institution, that is, the Crown in this case, to whom tribute is paid. What is important is the image that it radiates simply because it means something that society considers it to be. It is not a word game.

In France, when President Macron holds a solo press conference for important occasions, all journalists rise from their seats as a sign of respect for the institution. They do not stand up for Macron individual. He is the president of the French Republic, and that is all he is. It is the institutional sense of the occasion that forces or invites attendees to rise, not the individual.

The applause after the swearing in of the Constitution has been long. Strikingly long. Almost eternal. At that moment, the Princess of Asturias did not know very well what to do. It was the King who seemed to ask for a smile or thanks. And it’s normal. Leonor has to begin to internalize, assume, understand that a king or queen are not nominal people. Rather the complete opposite. There must be self-denial to accept the tremendous damage that has fallen on him. After the difficult task of always being in its place, it will be given the value it deserves. But, to begin with, he is only part of the institution that supports this parliamentary monarchy.

If we ask kids their age if they would change, if they would want to be princesses, not from a fairy tale, but from a democratic structure, they all say no. There must be a reason! No parties, no getaways, no crazy things, no going unnoticedbut a lot of handshakes.
