Leon, Elly, Jeroen, Karin, FC Emmen and Nacht van Winschoten: all winners. This is the good news this week

Good news is not news, they say. Well, we think so! Read here the weekly overview of the sweetest, nicest, most hopeful and funniest news from Groningen and Drenthe. With matching songs and links to even more good news.

The oldest zebra finch in the world is pampered in Erica

He’s a frail, scratchy old man. The plumage becomes thinner and duller and it is no longer a high flyer. Yet the World of Birds bird sanctuary in Erica is very proud of the zebra finch that it recently took into care. At thirteen years old, the bird is the oldest zebra finch in the world. Really, they looked into it. In human years the finch would be 120. Truly a respectable age. May the bird enjoy its old age for a long time.

Leon from Muntendam wins the Poet in the Postcode Lottery

And then a lot of winners. These are the first two. Once again the Postcode Lottery has hit the mark in these parts. This time Leon from Muntendam is the lucky one. He won a prize of 41,300 euros in the accompanying television broadcast. Fellow villager Jans went home with a new car. With all the recent news about prize winners in mind, you’d say there are more winners than losers in this lottery these days. But beware, that’s exactly what lotteries want you to believe.

FC Emmen grabs testicular cancer by the balls and wins 50,000 euros

Next winner: FC Emmen. Huh, how is that possible? After all, things are not going so well in terms of sport and organization at this friendly Drenthe professional club. Performance on the football field is still a long way off, but with the #checkyourballs campaign, to encourage men to regularly check the scrotum for symptoms of testicular cancer, the club won a first prize, worth 50,000 – er – balls in the Voetbal Geeft van initiative. Friends Lottery, Eredivisie CV and ESPN. Nice initiative and good price for an important item!

Elly from Klazienaveen wins two titles at the World Shuffleboard Championships

Which means we haven’t finished writing about numbers one yet. And what kind. Elly Mensen from Klazienaveen has become world champion in women’s shuffleboard in Beneden-Leeuwen. Yes, there is a World Cup of that! She also fought her way to the world title with the Dutch team. A double blow for Elly. Clubmate Jacquelien Klunder finished third in the title battle. Let them slide, those ladies!

Jeroen from Rolde doubles down at the NK sculpture saws

And then the tree saw art. Once again a winner from our own region. Because titles can also be given in tree sawing art. Jeroen Boersma from Rolde has won two titles at the Dutch Sculpture Saw Championship. It was also the second time that he became Dutch champion. Boersma works with dead wood, but as soon as he puts his chainsaw in it, the wood takes on new life. Without a root, but with a face! That’s what you call hand (and saw) skill!

Nacht van Winschoten returns gloriously after cancellation

The night of Winschoten seemed to be the big loser of incidents in the criminal circuit this summer. The originally planned Night was canceled after shootings. However, the catering industry was not deterred and last weekend organized the traditional Night with a fair, music and filled terraces. No incidents this time. In this way, Night wins over subversive activities. A Night that can withstand the light of day!

Karin from Coevorden puts her best foot forward in the Netherlands in Movement

Well, another winner, a sporty one that is. One from the category: persistence wins! Karin Kwint from Coevorden has been starring in the television program since this week The Netherlands in motion. And that for a whole autumn! Karin participates in the exercises that Barbara de Loor presents as successor to the almost irreplaceable Olga Commandeur. Karin has tried to get through to the participants in front of the camera twice before. The third time she was one of the 18 lucky ones among the thousand registrations. The persistent wins and thus keeps moving. Double win. And join Barbara and Karin at home!

Bram saves replica of Hoogersmilde transmission tower

Finally, the category is remarkable. An almost ten-meter-high replica of the well-known television tower in the village has been standing on the Bosweg in Hoogersmilde for a few days now. The smaller version previously stood in the miniature park of Appelscha. The replica was in danger of disappearing, but was rescued and refurbished by Bram Koenrades. It may be a little brother of the large transmission tower, but according to many, it shines just as well and is still a big attention grabber. And that’s what it’s all about.
