Lenny Kuhr has been overwhelmed by the praise after her performance in Even Tot Hier on NPO1 on Saturday evening. The Eindhoven singer sang a song about Louis van Gaal in the humorous program to the tune of her hit De Troubadour. “This is out of category,” a fan wrote about De Admiraal on Twitter. The fragment is spreading like wildfire on social media.
Watch Lenny Kuhr’s song about Louis van Gaal, the admiral, here:
Lenny Kuhr is still enjoying himself on Monday morning, at home on the couch. “Of course it remains to be seen how it will turn out if you are going to do something like this, but everyone is really full of praise. I have had so many nice reactions.”
It is un-Dutch, lurking for a counter chance
He lets us win without shine, the Admiral, Louis van Gaal
Lenny Kuhr was allowed to rehearse twice quickly. “Very exciting. You have to be super focused to tell the story well. And also special, that you have to sing it so fresh from the pen. It was so current. And Niels and Jeroen were also nervous. But as soon as I had sung, I heard that they were very happy with it. ‘Great!’, they shouted.”
If the Netherlands had lost to America, the text would of course have been different. And the presenters of the program were not quite sure about the basic text either. “Is it fun enough, they wondered. Now I sang ‘it’s not pretty’, but in an earlier text that was still ‘boring’, for example. And they doubted whether the line ‘he is smart and we are stupid’ was brilliant or a miss.”
We thought, oh why? Oh man, change that system
But he is smart and we are stupid, the admiral, Louis van Gaal
Jeroen Woe and Niels van der Laan were therefore also very enthusiastic about Lenny Kuhr’s performance. “Never had such a tough guy here, they said. Live in one go.”
The program makers probably came up with the idea of the song for the Admiral through Lenny Kuhr’s performance in 1974 for another national coach, Rinus Michels. “Then we traveled to Spain, where the Orange squad was in training camp. for the song The General. That was amazing.”
