Lemke sees no reason for excessive fear of a nuclear accident

BERLIN (dpa-AFX) – Environment Minister Steffi Lemke (Greens) sees no reason for excessive fear in Germany of the consequences of a nuclear accident in Ukraine. The population living in the immediate vicinity of the nuclear power plants in Ukraine is exposed to a far greater risk than the German population, Lemke told the newspapers of the Funke media group. “Due to the distance to Ukraine, it is unlikely that taking iodine tablets in Germany would be necessary, even in a worst-case scenario.” Even in this case, the necessary precautions have been taken. “Together with the Federal Office for Radiation Protection, we keep a close eye on the situation and all precautions.”

The shelling of facilities at the Russian-occupied Zaporizhia nuclear power plant has sparked international fears of a nuclear catastrophe. According to Kyiv, a Russian missile also landed near another nuclear power plant in southern Ukraine.

Lemke recalled the warning from the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS). This had already pointed out in the spring that taking iodine tablets would only make sense in very few situations.

According to the BfS, iodine tablets serve as protection against the accumulation of radioactive iodine in the thyroid gland in the event of a nuclear accident. “We strongly advise against taking the pills yourself. Self-medication poses significant health risks, but is currently of no use,” the Ministry of the Environment said in March. The ministry is also responsible for nuclear safety in Germany./csd/DP/ngu
