Lego stops project to make blocks from recycled PET bottles: “Higher CO2 emissions” | Environment

Lego announced in 2021 that it would investigate whether PET bottles could be used for the production of the famous Lego blocks. Lego now tells the ‘Financial Times’ that PET bottles would cause higher CO2 emissions. The company will improve the ecological footprint of ABS, a hard petroleum-based plastic.

Tim Brooks, head of sustainability at Lego, indicates that PET bottles require additional ingredients to make them safe and durable enough, as well as large amounts of energy to process and dry them. “It’s like trying to make a bicycle out of wood instead of steel,” Brooks said.
