Legionella outbreak in Poland has already claimed 19 lives | Abroad

19 people have already died in the major legionella outbreak in Rzeszów, Poland. This is evident from a new balance of health services. All of the deceased also had other health problems.

One hundred and sixty people became infected with the bacteria. Most come from Rzeszów, a city of 196,000 inhabitants 250 kilometers from the capital Warsaw.

The legionella bacteria can cause a serious lung infection. An infection carries risks, especially for people with a weakened immune system or with diseases such as diabetes or heart and lung diseases. Smokers and older people are also more at risk.

The contamination occurs through the respiratory tract after inhaling bacteria through, for example, water spray or air conditioning. The bacteria grows best at temperatures between 25 and 45 degrees. Growth is inhibited above 55 degrees and above 60 degrees the germs die.
