The Polish football club Legia Warsau is, to say the least, not happy with the events at the AZ stadium last night. Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki also speaks of ‘very disturbing images’. Two players from the Polish club were arrested by the police after the match and are still in custody. A riot police officer also became unconscious.
On X, formerly Twitter, the club speaks of ‘scandalous events after the match against AZ Alkmaar’. After the match, the riot police allegedly stormed the team bus and arrested two football players, the ANP reported.
Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki is also not happy with the conditions in Alkmaar. “Very disturbing messages from Alkmaar”, he writes on X. Images circulating online show that there is a disagreement between the riot police and representatives of Legia Warsaw. Club directors are said to have suffered blows.
Arrested football players
A police spokesperson cannot confirm whether the arrested men are the footballers, but can say that they are a 28-year-old man from Serbia and a 33-year-old man from Portugal. Both men are still in custody for assaulting two people. One of them was so injured that he had to go to hospital. He will report it later. “The other person has already reported assault,” the spokesperson told NH.
According to media partner NOS one of the injured is a safety coordinator from AZ. He was allegedly abused by Legia Warsau players to such an extent that he ended up in hospital with a concussion and a broken elbow, De Telegraaf reports.
Earlier that evening, before the start of the match, Legia Warsau supporters stormed the entrance to the away section. According to the police, this was brutal, with Legia supporters using a lot of violence against stewards and police officers. A riot police officer became unconscious. He was unable to continue after treatment.
The police then used tear gas. The disturbances caused a number of visitors to go to the visitors’ section without a ticket or checking the ticket.
