Jean-Luc Godard is dead. According to the French newspaper Liberation, the filmmaker died at the age of 91.

Godard was one of the most influential European film directors, co-founder of the Nouvelle Vague of French film and a fixed point of the primarily experimental auteur cinema.

With films like “Out of Breath”, “The Contempt” and “Eleven O’clock at Night” he also achieved masterpieces in the 1960s that were celebrated by the general public. In 2010 he received an honorary Oscar for his life’s work.

Legendary auteur filmmaker Jean Luc Godard is one of the great influences of the young George Lucas. The future blockbuster king ended one of his early student films with the line “Directed By Lucas” – just like the director of “Out of Breath” did. “THX 1138” is reminiscent of Godard’s “Alphaville” in many ways.

Godard had withdrawn from the public eye in recent years. In 2018 he brought his last film “Le Livre d’image” to the cinemas.
