Left-wing radicals want to recruit young people from Neukölln for May 1st

The Berlin police are expecting 10,000 to 15,000 participants at the left-wing and radical left-wing demonstration on the evening of May 1st.

May 1st is still the symbolic day for the radical left scene, police chief Barbara Slowik said on Friday on RBB Inforadio. Political issues such as high rents, the Ukraine war, the Middle East conflict and inflation ensure a high number of participants.

In addition, the left-wing autonomous scene is trying to persuade young people in Neukölln to take part in the demonstration and possible riots, said Slowik. “You try to address the often not so political youth in Neukölln and ask them to join the riots.”

There are also posters that say “New Year’s Eve 2.0”. The police also warned suspects from New Year’s Eve against participating in so-called endangered speeches.

However, cooperation between climate protection demonstrators and left-wing radicals is unlikely, said Slowik. The climate activists have always emphasized that they are peaceful.

In the traditional demonstration, there are always minor or major outbreaks of violence from left-wing rioters. As always, the train starts at 6 p.m. this year, this time in Neukölln on Hermannstraße. It then leads via Hermannplatz, Karl-Marx-Straße, Sonnenallee and Kottbusser Damm to Kottbusser Tor, where the new police station is, and ends at Oranienplatz.

As early as the afternoon of May 1, left-wing groups want to march through the villa district of Grunewald with colorful satirical actions and demonstrations.

As every year, the Berlin police will be on duty with a total of several thousand police officers due to the many events, including reinforcements from other federal states and the federal police.
