SCHWEDT (dpa-AFX) – Left leader Martin Schirdewan advocates examining exceptions to the EU oil embargo for the PCK refinery in Schwedt, Brandenburg. The federal government has undertaken to implement the embargo by the end of the year, said Schirdewan in the ZDF summer interview on Sunday. “But at the same time you can think about whether there is an exception, at least for those affected in the Schwedt region, to secure jobs.”
The plant in Schwedt is operated by the Russian state-owned company Rosneft (Rosneft Oil Company) with Russian oil from the “Druzhba” pipeline. The federal government is looking for other ways to supply the site with oil, but has not yet presented a final plan. Schirdewan said: “A guarantee plan is needed for the region, job guarantees are needed for the people who are directly affected. It is the federal government’s duty to ensure that the most negative consequences for German society are prevented.”
Schirdewan also defended left-wing energy expert Klaus Ernst against criticism. Ernst is chairman of the energy and climate committee in the Bundestag. “And I think it’s right, and he must do the same, to ask about energy security.” He thinks Ernst’s idea of temporarily using the Nord Stream 2 pipeline for gas deliveries from Russia is wrong. “By the way, he didn’t repeat it, we discussed it internally,” said Schirdewan.
Ernst had triggered opposition with his advance. He had told the “Rheinische Post” that the federal government had to do everything to ensure a secure energy supply. “To do this, you have to talk to Russia, despite the war that is illegal under international law. If necessary, also about putting Nord Stream 2 into operation for a limited period of time if the gas supply cannot be guaranteed in any other way.”/vsr/DP/he
