Leendert Desmet the only Belgian at the World Swimming Championships for the deaf

The selection for the World Cup is a great honor for Leendert and his swimming club Thor, but at the same time also a tough one. All costs are for their own account, which is why the swimming club from Torhout has set up crowdfunding to make its dream come true. “There is no support for the time being. Within two years there will be the Deaflympics, and the BOIC will step in, but there are no subsidies for a World Cup and a European Championship. Everything is at the expense of mom and dad, and the club. We want to raise 5,000 euros with crowdfunding, which covers the costs of the flight for himself and the trainer and their accommodation,” explains chairman Carl Desmet.

Leendert would like to reach the final at the World Cup and according to the target times he might succeed. Either way, it’s going to be an adventure, and a busy summer. First Leendert goes on an internship, and he swims the Belgian championship.
