Leeds United part ways with manager Javi Gracia and bring in Sam Allardyce

4th head coach this season

Leeds United are looking for their fourth head coach this season to increase their chances of staying up in the Premier League. As the club announced on Wednesday, Javi Gracia, who had only been responsible since February 24, was relieved of his duties. Veteran Sam Allardyce, who has been without a club since June 2021, will now take over until the end of the season. Previously, among others “The Times” and Fabrizio Romano reported on the upcoming change on the sidelines.

Gracia took over Leeds about two weeks after the dismissal of the former Leipzig coach Jesse Marsch, meanwhile the previous U21 coach Michael Skubala was on the sidelines for three games. For the 53-year-old Spaniard, “The Whites” were the 13th coaching station in the fifth country. Gracia leaves Leeds with a points average of 0.92 from 12 games – Marsch was quoted at 1.16. There is not only an adjustment on the coaching chair: Sports director Víctor Orta (in office since 2017) is also leaving the club – his departure by mutual agreement was confirmed on Tuesday. Leeds spent a total of €146m on new arrivals in 2022/23 (10th in the league), compared to €115m on departures.

The club is 17th in the Premier League after 34 games, just outside the relegation zone. The remaining opponents are Manchester City, Newcastle United, West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur. In the event of relegation, the 68-year-old Allardyce reportedly receives a seven-figure bonus. Apparently, ex-professional Lee Bowyer was recently considered as an alternative. In the end, the experienced solution should ensure the Premier League whereabouts.

Most recently, Leeds’ players were berated by their own fans after the 4-1 defeat by Bournemouth. The team then apologized publicly because young supporters who wanted photos and autographs were ignored on the way to the team bus.
