Learning and acting: First-year students at TH Lübeck build insect hotels

After a welcome from the dean’s office and the introduction of the courses by the respective course directors, there was a campus tour that gave the first-year students an insight into life and studying on campus. Over the course of the two compact weeks in the projects, the new students dealt with, among other things, various materials and structures, but also with aspects of the circular economy, went on excursions and built insect hotels.

Act together: build insect hotels

Stefan Gruthoff, Marcin Pionke and Anna Schlundt supervised the joint project for the Bachelor’s degree programs in Architecture, Civil Engineering, Urban Planning and Sustainable Building Engineering in the Bauforum. The aim of the project is for students to work together across disciplines. The aim is to prepare them for their future professional lives in the construction industry, in which they will be in daily contact with a wide variety of trades. This year, the freshmen dedicated themselves to building insect hotels. At the beginning, the students researched which dwellings are particularly suitable for which animals and also in which directions the hotels should be oriented. After completing the research and preparing the drafts, the students took action together and put the plans into practice.

The compact weeks of Department of Construction end on Friday, October 6th, with an exhibition of the works in the Bauforum. From 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. they will set up the exhibition and then present their work.
