Leaked details from investigation into carnival drama Strépy: public prosecutor’s office conducts investigation into violation of professional secrecy | Domestic

In the case of the car driver who crashed into a group of carnivalists in Strépy-Bracquegnie in 2022, the Mons public prosecutor’s office is conducting an investigation into breach of professional secrecy after details of an expert report appeared in the press last week. Crown prosecutor Vincent Macq said this on Wednesday.

Almost two years ago – on March 20, 2022 – six people were killed when a car driver crashed into a group of carnival attendees early in the morning. About forty others were injured. The driver, Paolo Falzone, was first charged with unintentional manslaughter and unintentional assault and battery in a traffic accident. But at the end of August 2022, the council chamber reclassified the facts to manslaughter of one of the six victims, Frédéric d’Andrea. In August 2023, Falzone was released with an ankle monitor.

In the meantime, the expert report on the drama has been completed and details of it leaked into the media last week, much to the dismay of the public prosecutor’s office. “An investigation is underway into possible breach of professional secrecy,” Macq said.

According to ‘RTL Info’, which was the first to report on the report, it states, among other things, that Falzone was initially driving at a speed of 174 kilometers per hour – while the limit was 50 kilometers per hour – and at the time of the collision was still traveling at 105 kilometers per hour. It would also state that if the driver had applied the brakes immediately, instead of just slowing down, the speed would have dropped to 21 miles per hour at the time of impact.

The public prosecutor’s office indicated in mid-February that additional investigations were being carried out in the file. “These are not onerous or time-consuming requests and we are confident that the fruits of that investigation can be added to the file in the spring,” said Macq.

This year, the Strépy Carnival will take place from March 3 to 5. Commemorations are planned for March 20: relatives will lay a wreath at the foot of the memorial stone in the rue des Canadiens.
