Leader of the Polish ruling party calls for peacekeeping mission in Ukraine in Kiev

The leader of the Polish ruling party PiS, Jars Kaczynski, called for an international peace mission in Ukraine on Tuesday evening in Kiev, Reuters news agency reported. Former Prime Minister Kaczynski said this during a joint press conference with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky: “I think a peace mission is needed; of NATO and possibly in a wider international structure,” he said. “But at least a mission that can defend itself and that will operate on Ukrainian soil.”

Kaczynski had traveled by train to Kiev on Tuesday together with Polish Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki, Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala and Slovenian Prime Minister Janez Jansa to meet with Zelensky and his Prime Minister Denis Shmyhal. They are the first government leaders to visit Kiev since the start of the Russian invasion on February 24. The mission envisioned by Kaczynski will “pursue peace, provide humanitarian aid while being protected by armed forces.”

Zelensky said at the press conference that he was happy with the support shown by political leaders from Eastern Europe by visiting Kiev, still hit by Russian airstrikes during the night from Monday to Tuesday. “We have complete confidence in these countries and their leaders and are 100 percent sure that whatever we discuss will help achieve the goals for our country, our security and our future.”
