‘Leader’ of Emmen youth gang in court

Today, 20-year-old Jermain S. from Emmen is in court as the third suspect in the case of the fatal theft in the Yorneo youth care institution. According to the Public Prosecution Service (OM), S. sent two teenagers to commit a robbery at a gas station a year ago. This culminated in the robbery murder of a 26-year-old supervisor in the youth institution in Emmen.

The Public Prosecution Service suspects S. of being the leader of a youth gang in Emmen. He decided in which composition a theft or robbery was committed and provided the attributes and clothing. The youth gang is also held responsible for, among other things, the robbery of the McDonalds in Emmen. A shot was fired.

Not only S., but also 20-year-old Regino de W. from Groningen sent the young people on their way. De W. will appear in court in Assen on Tuesday. The three teenagers who carried out the violent jobs were vulnerable young people. All three lived under supervision. Two in the Yorneo reception center and one in B-Point in Emmen.

S.’s home was the base for the gang, the public prosecutor outlined at previous preliminary hearings. At that time, a decision was made in particular on the pre-trial detention of the suspects. S. is said to have put pressure on the teenagers. They were not allowed to return empty-handed.

On the evening of January 14, 2023, two boys aged 16 and 19 walked to the gas station on Wolfsbergenweg armed with a knife. The pumping station was closed. The teenagers came up with the idea to steal the safe from the Yorneo shelter. The youngest lived there at the time.

The supervisor was stabbed to death during the theft. Last week, the Public Prosecution Service demanded two and ten years in prison and TBS with compulsory treatment against the now 17 and 20-year-old suspects respectively. The supervisor was killed in order to steal the safe, which means qualified manslaughter has been proven, the public prosecutor said last week.

The alleged gang leader from Emmen has been psychologically examined. This is important to determine to what extent the actions can be attributed to him. This also determines the amount of any punishment imposed on him. The Public Prosecution Service will come up with a penalty demand in the afternoon, to which the defense can respond.
