Borussia Mönchengladbach drew 1-1 at Bayern Munich in the Bundesliga. Gladbach led for a long time – also thanks to Yann Sommer’s saves.

Bayern remain the 1-1 (1-0) with ten points due to the better goal difference in front of Union Berlin. Gladbach is sixth in the table with eight points. Marcus Thuram had scored the lead for Gladbach. Goalkeeper Yann Sommer held the lead for a long time, but in the end Leroy Sané secured a point for the overwhelmingly superior Bayern. “If we score the opening goal, Gladbach has no chance”Bayern Munich coach Julian Nagelsmann said on ARD radio. “It’s a very lucky point for the opponent.”

Thuram capitalizes on Upamecano’s mistake

The game was interrupted in the early stages. A woman and a man had run onto the pitch and tied themselves to two goalposts. The action was a protest for more climate protection, their T-shirts read “Stop the fossil madness”.

The game continued a little later. The ball went into Gladbach’s goal twice in the period that followed, and the goal didn’t count on both occasions. Both of Sadio Mané’s supposed hits didn’t count because of offside, the video assistant had to take a closer look at the first.

On the other side there was no doubt about the validity of Gladbach’s opening goal: After Christoph Kramer’s free shot from the Gladbach half, Bayern defender Dayot Upamecano missed the ball. He was unable to catch Marcus Thuram, the Gladbacher easily defeated Bayern goalkeeper Manuel Neuer (43rd minute).

Choreography of FC Bayern’s south curve before the game against Gladbach

Summer outstanding – but in the end Sané meets

The second half also started with an interruption. The organized Bayern fan scene celebrated with a choreography before the game “50 Years South Curve” in memory of the beginning of Bayern’s time in the Olympic Stadium. In the 50th minute, many fans ignited pyrotechnics, which is why the game had to be briefly interrupted.

Bayern then pressed for the equaliser. Mané missed a huge chance in the 61st minute when he failed completely free-standing from close range by Gladbach goalkeeper Yann Sommer – even in the margin. Sommer made numerous strong saves, especially in this phase: he held on to the lead against Jamal Musiala (70th), Leroy Sané (64th and 72nd), Serge Gnabry (72nd), Benjamin Pacard (76th).

In the end, however, Bayern still managed to equalize and thus at least win a point. Musiala moved into the penalty area and served Sané perfectly, who put the ball into the goal on the bottom left (83′). Matthijs de Ligt almost scored the winning goal for Bayern in added time – but failed like so many before him because of Sommer.

Sommer’s contract expires

Sommer announced that he would soon be talking to those responsible at Borussia Mönchengladbach about his expiring contract. “Now we’ll sit down together in the next few days and then we’ll let you know if there’s anything to tell.”said the Swiss at Sky.

summer said: “I’ve been here for eight years, if it didn’t go well together I wouldn’t be here for a long time.” On the game he added: “I’m glad I did a good job so we can take a point today.”
