In doing so, Mary referred to the various testimonies of the Giant Gums who stated that they often happened not to be present at the various times of the baptism or had not seen the three shafts drink fish oil or be doused with water.
Mary also understood the angry reaction of father Dia when, at the end of the interrogation, he asked CM why his son had died and not CM, who had said that of the three shafts he was dealt the most severely during the baptism. “Then why is my son dead?”, Ousmane Dia wanted to know. “I’m bigger and heavier than him. And I cheated a lot more (the student explained earlier that he pretended to drink fish sauce, ed.). I think Sanda’s honesty killed him.”
“I can understand Mr. Dia’s anger,” Mary said afterwards. “They have promised that they came here to tell the truth. It is their truth, but not the truth.”
To punish
Mary also responded cautiously with satisfaction after the prosecution’s claim. Prosecutors demanded prison sentences ranging from 18 to 60 months for all 18 Reuzegom members.
“For my clients as a civil party, victim or next of kin, it’s actually very difficult to weigh this up,” Mary said. “It will never be enough for a victim. There has been a claim. I think the technicality of the problems that come now is a bigger problem than that penalty. I think that penalty was in line with our expectations.”
