The lawn problems in Saarbrücken’s Ludwigspark continue. After the DFB Cup quarter-final against Gladbach, the DFB has now also canceled 1. FC Saarbrücken’s third division game against Unterhaching on Sunday.

The Ludwigspark Stadium and the lawn – a never-ending story: Just one day after the very short notice cancellation of the DFB Cup game against Borussia Mönchengladbach On Thursday afternoon, the DFB also showed the red card for the upcoming league game against the Unterhaching game association next Sunday.

The DFB announced that the decision to cancel the game was made by the DFB game management in coordination with the two clubs involved and the city of Saarbrücken as the stadium owner.

“Turf unplayable”

“The pitch in the Ludwigsparkstadion is still unplayable after the persistent rain. Given the weather forecast, no short-term improvement for the weekend is foreseeable despite the stadium operator’s current measures,” the DFB said in a statement.

There is also the risk that the turf could otherwise be so badly affected that the performance of games in the Ludwigsparkstadion would be jeopardized over a longer period of time.

An alternative date is not fixed yet. First, the DFB Cup quarter-final game against Mönchengladbach should be scheduled.

Game canceled in October

Already At the end of October, a game against Dresden had to be canceled – at half-time the score was 0-0. And even at the rescheduled date the match was in the balance.

Shortly afterwards the second round of the DFB Cup took place – the top game against Bayern Munich. Here too, the fans had to worry about whether the pitch would be playable at all, again because of the heavy rain. The referee only gave the green light on the day of the match.

Lawn: renovation or replacement?

At the beginning of the week, the Saarbrücken city council decided to carry out renovations during the summer break. A decision should then be made as to whether the lawn needs to be fundamentally renovated or completely replaced.

Until then there are still a few games on the program. Solutions must now be found for this, said the head of the building department of the city of Saarbrücken, Berberich.
