The compensation path to protect forests

The Group’s approach to carbon neutrality it begins reducing emissions along Lavazza’s entire value chain, from the cultivation of coffee to end of life through all the intermediate stages.

With the knowledge that all emissions cannot be completely reduced, Lavazza has undertaken a carbon offsetting path residuals, i.e. for those for which a reduction was not possible.

In 2020 Lavazza began its journey offsetting direct emissions and reaching the complete neutrality emissions for the offices and production plants of the Group.

The ultimate goal is achieve complete neutrality carbon offsetting all indirect emissions, that is all the emissions generated along the entire value chain from the cultivation of green coffee, from the packaging, from the distribution of the final product, from the use and from the product disposal.

The first CO2-neutral products of the brand

At the level of product, on the other hand, the new Lavazza aluminum capsules compatible with Nespresso * Original machines are among the the first Lavazza products to be CO2-neutral. This means that all annual issues of greenhouse gases relating to the volumes produced and placed on the market are compensated.

This path is consistent with the Lavazza Group’s commitment to adhere to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, in particular by responding to the targets of SDG (Sustainable Development Goals) 12 (responsible consumption and production) e SDG 13 (fight against climate change).

Inside a Lavazza capsule, there is a commitment to the environment

The project selected for the offsetting of emissions is called Mother de Diòs, and is implemented in Peru. It aims to protect the Madre de Diòs forests from human settlements, obtaining a double advantage. On the one hand, preserves the carbon captured in trees, on the other protects biodiversity local e ensures the livelihood of communities indigenous, which depend on the forest for their survival.

Lavazza, never been so “green”

The project, certified by two high international standards, in nearly four decades he has not only 470 jobs created – with 100% Peruvian employees – but also has 100.00 hectares of Amazon rainforest safeguarded, by monitoring 35 threatened species. Not to mention the tons of CO2 saved, as well 25 thousand tons.
