In the parking lot of De Enk sports park in Grijpskerk, eight emergency classrooms will be placed for Lauwers College, which has been struggling with a lack of space for several years.
These temporary classrooms will replace the Kerkplein Zes building, which has housed students from the school since 2020. However, this building is outdated. In addition, the municipality intends to sell it.
It is not possible to expand the permanent accommodation of Lauwers College on Reitsema Burchtstraat. That is why the Westerkwartier city council made a budget available in 2022 for a study into a new location for the school. That place was found at sports park De Enk, on the sports field between the Bokkediek and the fierljep association. However, due to a rook population, it is unclear whether construction can actually take place.
The emergency classrooms will be placed in the week of Monday 24 July. The parking lot of the sports park, which is being halved, is therefore temporarily unavailable.
Increase in number of students
Lauwers College started personalized education (GO) in the 2018-2019 school year. In consultation with their coaches, the students choose to work independently in groups or to receive explanations from a teacher in a classroom setting.
Since the introduction of this new educational concept, the intake of students at Lauwers College has increased considerably.
