Lauterbach: Summer Corona wave is here

In view of the increasing number of corona infections, Federal Health Minister Karl Lauterbach (SPD) advised older people and people with previous illnesses to get a booster vaccination.

“Unfortunately, the announced summer wave has become reality. That also means little relaxation for the next few weeks,” said Lauterbach of the “Rheinische Post” (Wednesday).

The previously observed summer effect in the pandemic fizzled out this time. The reason for this is, among other things, that the currently circulating virus variant is very easily transferable. In addition, almost all precautionary measures have expired, Karl Lauterbach explained to the newspaper.

“I therefore strongly recommend that older people and those who have previously been ill be vaccinated again.” This does not necessarily prevent an infection, but it does prevent serious illnesses.

Incidence is increasing rapidly

According to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI), the nationwide seven-day corona incidence on Wednesday morning was 472.4, almost twice as high as a week ago. The day before, the value of new infections per 100,000 inhabitants and week was 447.3 (previous week: 238.1; previous month: 452.4).

However, the incidence does not provide a complete picture of the infection situation. Experts have been assuming for some time that there will be a large number of cases not recorded by the RKI – mainly because by far not all infected people have a PCR test done. Only positive PCR tests count in the statistics. In addition, late registrations or transmission problems can lead to a distortion of individual daily values.

The chairman of the Virchowbund, Dirk Heinrich, also called for vaccination – especially those who do not yet have vaccination protection. “Anyone who has not yet been vaccinated should be vaccinated now to avoid serious illness,” Heinrich told the “Rheinische Post”.

The Virchowbund is an association that represents the interests of resident doctors. Heinrich also pointed out that older people or people who belong to a risk group should get a booster vaccination. He called on politicians to make preparations for the fall.
