Laura Siegemund has reached the quarter-finals of the WTA tournament in Nanchang, China – but will not compete.
On Friday, the 35-year-old initially defeated the Norwegian Ulrikke Eikeri (WTA 654th), who was ranked significantly lower in the world rankings, 6:1, 6:3, but a little later the WTA announced Siegemund’s upcoming opponent Katerina Siniakova (Czech Republic) for the quarter-finals ) as the winner without a fight.
The WTA did not provide any information about the reasons for Siegemund’s withdrawal. However, she may want to concentrate on the doubles competition in Nanchang, where Siegemund is in the semi-finals with her Russian partner Vera Zvonareva.
The duo still has a chance to qualify for the WTA Finals of the year’s best.
Siegemund (WTA 91st) had already reached the quarter-finals in Zhengzhou last week and returned to the top 100 in the world rankings for the first time in around two years.
