Laura Borràs, possible vice president of Junts

  • The head of the Parliament could occupy the presidency when Puigdemont leaves her, with Turull as general secretary and with an inclusive leadership

  • Sànchez is committed to strategic work, while the different sectors are taking positions ahead of the decisive meeting in June and July

As the date of the first congress of together since its founding conclave, the pieces of the puzzle of a party that has in its virtue, the heterogeneityits main challenge, the lack of cohesion. The backing of jordi sanchezgeneral secretary, to the ‘exconseller’ Jordi Turull as a successor is just one of these internal power reorganization moves. Others, not minor, are the possibility that Laura BorrasPresident of the Parliament, assumes the vice presidency of the party led by the ‘ex-president’ Carles Puigdemont, that an integrating management list of the different visible heads be forged and that Sànchez dedicate himself to strategic thinking through a ‘think tank’, a laboratory of ideas. All this if the premise of the ex-convergent veterans is fulfilled, which is that of the covenant. Otherwise, the battle can be devastating.

The first move in this puzzle was made by Sànchez. Clearly betting on Turull, in an interview with EL PERIÓDICO, he opened the dance. In this way, the still general secretary tries to tie down a leadership of the party consistent with his ideas: occupy the center of the board, avoid turning Junts into an agitation movement, and combine management in the regional government with proclamations in favor of achieving the independence by way of mobilization when the circumstances arise. What circumstances? No one in Junts has the crystal ball, but Turull will undoubtedly -because of his convergent past- organize the party in a classic way and will also maintain the discourse demanded by the most radical bases in favor of once again provoking an open conflict with the State . The gesture problem Sanchez it is that it can give Turull an image of a man pointed out by the current secretary general, when Sànchez has various internal adversaries.

The next movement, in parallel with the first, is the position of Borras, who was the party’s candidate in the elections and holds the presidency of Parliament. Her environment maintains that she has to aspire to the highest level, that in primaries -as happened with the ones she won Damia Calvet to occupy the electoral poster – would devastate and that has the enthusiastic support of the bases. But it also has a certain level of wear and tear and the rejection of the most pragmatic sectors. If the majority thesis prevails, it should reach an agreement with Turull. And the internal logic points to him occupying the vice-presidency of the party while waiting for Puigdemont to decide to leave this position -as he weighs- to focus on the presidency of the Council for the Republic. It remains to be seen whether Borràs agrees to this movement of tokens, which could lead to the disappearance of the other existing vice-presidencies –Joseph Riusis already a spokesperson, anna erra presides over the national council, and Turull would be promoted to general secretary- to further elevate the figure of Borràs.

The satellites, decisive

But the Junts ecosystem is complex. Figures from inside and outside the party move around Borràs who, like the ‘ex-president’ Quim Torra, hoist the flag of the highest demand to formalize the proclamation of independence right now and abhor autonomous management. This weight -considered an inadmissible ballast by the most possible voices- must be taken into account in the equations about Borràs, in case it can be left out of his vice-presidency.

Also key is the figure of leaders who from the outset are not aligned with the president or with Turull, who hold positions in the Government and the party and who may have specific weight when it comes to forming the executive that leaves congress. Everyone hopes that there will not be two lists in contention but a single candidacy. Turull has positions in the Government, such as the ‘conselleras’ cervera Y Ciuróand with leaders of great ascendancy, such as Joseph Rull or his own Calvet, who will row in your favor without hesitation. Other leaders to watch out for are Albert Batetthead of the parliamentary group, or Miriam Noguerasvisible head of the training in Congress.

Without a doubt, the congress will settle a struggle for power, but in parallel the ideas will be debated. The presentations -which could finally be four: political, organizational, sectoral and municipal policies- will debate the roadmap. That, in the strategy, is where jordi sanchez he could occupy a prominent position, leading a laboratory of ideas. He has not revealed his future but has confirmed that he will continue in Junts and that he has a fondness for political analysis. A way to try to continue influencing the piloting. The confrontation between Sànchez and the most radical has been constant in these two years, while Puigdemont has at all times avoided getting involved in internal day-to-day issues.

The battle of ideas is not an abstract issue, because it permeates key decisions such as the policy of alliances -Sànchez, for example, opens the door to agreements with the PSC at the municipal level-, the relationship with CKD and the stability of the Government. A Government in which it is not ruled out that there may be changes in Junts portfolios after the congress to strengthen the new stage.
