FC Bayern Munich has been eliminated from the Champions League. Despite being the favorites, Munich were beaten by Villarreal – sporting director Salihamidzic had previously smiled at the lot.
The clear favorites from Munich did not achieve the hoped-for turnaround after the flattering 0-1 in the first leg of the quarter-finals in the Allianz Arena either: with a final score of 1-1 (0-0) FC Bayern missed out on progressing in the Champions League on Tuesday against Villarreal.
After the game, a short clip made the rounds on the internet.
In it: Hasan Salihamidzic. The club’s sports director is a guest on the in-house broadcaster “Bayern-TV”. Together with the moderator, he comments on the draw for the quarter-finals. When Villarreal is the opponent, the moderator starts to laugh and asks Salihamidzic if it’s a “feasible lot”. He also laughs and answers the question with “Yes”.
The Bayern boss was later interpreted as arrogance. But in the full excerpt you can see how Salihamidzic praises Villarreal’s 3-0 surprise against Turin in the round of 16. He also says that Bayern will accept the task – albeit in vain.
Now the team coached by Nagelsmann, whose first season has suffered serious scratches, “only” has the tenth championship in a row as a consolation. At the weekend, the task is called Arminia Bielefeld.
