The criminal proceedings against the president of the world football association FIFA, Gianni Infantino, in the so-called “Lauber case” have been discontinued.
The two extraordinary federal prosecutors Ulrich Weder and Hans Maurer announced on Thursday that the suspicion that the Swiss Federal Prosecutor’s Office had been used instrumentally had not been confirmed in the course of the investigation. The suspicion was refuted.
Infantino: “Clear victory for me”
“This is a complete, clear and clear victory for me, for the new FIFA and for justice,” Infantino said in a statement: “It is now clear to everyone that the accusations against me are just desperate attempts by poor, envious and corrupt people People were attacking my reputation. If these people had even an ounce of dignity, they should at least have the decency to apologize for their actions and the harm they caused.”
“Always acted lawfully and correctly”
Infantino has been at the center of investigations since 2019. This involved three unrecorded meetings with the former Swiss federal prosecutor Michael Lauber. The investigation was carried out for violation of official secrecy, abuse of office and facilitation or incitement to do so.
“The full investigation clearly confirms that I have always acted lawfully and correctly and exclusively defended the interests of FIFA and football,” Infantino said.
