Latvian national team: Paolo Nicolato new coach

The Italian Paolo Nicolato will be the new coach of the Latvian national team. The 57-year-old former coach of Italian youth and U21 national teams had been selected for the vacant position, the Latvian association announced on Monday evening in Riga. Accordingly, the association board reached an agreement with Nicolato after lengthy negotiations. Predecessor Dainis Kazakevics had to leave in December.

According to association president Vadim Lasenko, Nicolato will receive a contract that runs until November 30, 2025. “We all know that Italy is a great power in football, especially when it comes to training coaches,” he said on Latvian radio on Tuesday. In qualifying for the 2024 European Championship, Latvia’s national team finished last in their group with just one win. Football only plays a minor role in the Baltic state.
