The opposition calls for more security after the stabbings on the second night of La Mercè

The opposition parties in Barcelona City Council have demanded improvements in security from the city’s mayor, Jaume Collboni, after regretting the six stabbings that occurred in the city on the second night of the La Mercè festivities. The Commissioner for Culture explained this morning that the attacks took place “outside the premises” of the Mercè festivities and “without any relationship with any venue or with any festive activity, neither local nor with any bottle.” The leader of JxCat in the city council, Xavier Trias, has made “a call for people not to do stupid things”, while he reminded Collboni that security is not only about acting when there are altercations, but also about preventing them. “Having fun is not doing stupid things or being a scoundrel, it is enjoying this city and the events we organize,” he stressed. For his part, the leader of ERC, Ernest Maragall, has regretted the events and has stated that they are “a message for all of us: for the institution, for the security forces and for their eventual responsibility in the control and maintenance of the coexistence”.Maragall added that he hopes that “we have the continuity of the festival with harmony”, and that “the city once again looks forward with a little more confidence and demand”.
