The chess world just won’t settle down. After the allegations of fraud against him, Hans Niemann counterattacked and sued world champion Magnus Carlsen, among others. A risk, says chess expert Atle Gronn.
“If he cheated, I think that’s a high stake because cheating won’t get any less attention,” the Norwegian chess player told “NRK“.
Hans Niemann has been facing serious allegations for weeks. Chess world champion Magnus Carlsen gave up a game at the Julius Baer Generation Cup against the 19-year-old in mid-September in protest. In addition, the Norwegian had accused his competitor of fraud on Twitter.
The chess platform “chess.com” then came in its investigation (Here is the original document) to the conclusion that the Californian is said to have resorted to unauthorized computer support in many cases. Niemann had previously admitted to using computer help during a game once when he was 12 and once when he was 16.
Chess scandal continues to escalate
However, Niemann does not want to let the additional allegations sit. The controversial chess player is taking legal action against Carlsen.
The US grandmaster is demanding $100 million [rund 102 Millionen Euro] Damages from the Norwegian world champion as well as from Carlsen’s company “Play Magnus” and the two US chess players Danny Rensch and Hikaru Nakamura (here is the full lawsuit).
“It will be interesting for us in chess because now something more chess-related could be on the table,” Gronn commented on the latest developments surrounding the lawsuit. The chess saga around Niemann and Carlsen is far from over.
