SV Waldhof Mannheim suffered a bitter 3-1 defeat against the reserves of Borussia Dortmund in the 3rd division. Coach Patrick Glöckner’s team lost the game on Monday in a spectacular final phase. Marc Schnatterer gave the Waldhöfer an early lead (9th minute), but Ole Pohlmann scored to equalize in the 74th minute.
In the 90th minute, Immanuel Pherai fired a shot on Sunday and got past Mannheim goalkeeper Timo Königsmann. But that wasn’t the end of it: in the fourth minute of added time, Tobias Raschl converted a penalty kick for Dortmund. For the Waldhof it was the first home defeat since July 2021 – he missed the jump to third place.
Waldhof Mannheim off to a good start
The Waldhöfer got off to a better start in the game and created better opportunities in a lively early phase. But Marcel Costly (4th) and Schnatterer (8th) lacked precision in the end. Coach Glöckner’s team did better in the 9th minute: Martinovic beat two Dortmund players in the penalty area and served Schnatterer, who put the ball in for the lead.
Despite Mannheim’s leadership, BVB got into the game better, which became noticeably more rustic – this also applied to the duels. What followed? Carelessness on both sides: BVB keeper Stefan Drljača, for example, put the ball too far after 15 minutes and then only with difficulty prevented Mannheim’s second goal.
Pherai scores with dream goal
Both teams created chances until the change of sides – but none of them were mandatory and so the hosts took the lead into the dressing room. After the break tea it was again Schnatterer who could have decided the game in Waldhöfer’s favor (54′), but his long-range shot didn’t bring anything countable either. Pohlmann then pushed the ball into the far corner in the 74th minute and scored to make it 1-1.
Then the final phase, which was as spectacular as it was bitter from the Waldhöfer point of view, began: Pherai scored in the 90th minute to make it 2-1 with a long-range shot, which in Dortmund should be seen as a reminiscence of Lars Ricken. Only four minutes later, Raschl converted a penalty and sealed the 1:3 defeat of the Waldhöfer.
