With that share in the power supply, Belgium is in the top five in Europe. Only Denmark (25 percent) and the United Kingdom (15 percent) generated more electricity from offshore wind turbines in 2022. The Netherlands (7 percent) and Germany (5 percent) complete the European top five. In December, a record amount of electricity was generated off the Belgian coast (1,075 gigawatt hours).
The sector umbrella organization looks back with satisfaction on 2023, the third year that the full production capacity of Belgian wind turbines at sea will be used. The windmills turned about 95 percent of the time. The intention is for the wind energy zone to expand in the future.
